Warren County High School is pleased to announce Miss Krystle Wilburn has been named the STAR Student for 2012. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia's outstanding seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. The STAR program is coordinated by the Professional association of educators.

Miss Wilburn named Mr. Bill Vaughn her STAR teacher. Mr. Vaughn teaches chemistry at Warren County High School. When asked what led her to choose Vaughn, Wilburn stated, "I always thought I wanted to be a pediatrician until I entered Mr. Vaughn's class. He just had a way of sparking my interest in chemistry. I could even now see myself teaching chemistry someday."

Krystle will attend the University of West Georgia in the fall and plans to major in chemistry.

Mentors Meet with Young Entrepreneurs Academy

Local business leaders met for the first time as mentors to the students of Warren County High School's Young Entrepreneurs Academy class. Members of the class are working this semester on developing a business plan with the hopes of bringing their business to life by the end of the class. Business leaders who have partnered with Warren County High brought their years of experience to share and to review the student plans for the first time.

After a few nervous introductory moments, mentors and students spent the next hour discussing the student's business plans. The insight provided by Craig Hunter proved invaluable according to Ed'Ricus Williams. "Mr. Hunter helped us with our S.W.O.T. analysis and helped us to better understand some of our strengths and weaknesses."

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program seeks to expose students to the process of starting their own business. Another aspect of the program that attracted teacher Scott Swann and Chamber president O.B. McCorkle is the community involvement that it fosters. Swann states, "I taught a similiar entrepreneurship class last year, but felt the participation of the local business leaders was the thing that I really wanted to improve on this year. When the Chamber presented us with the opportunity for the YEA program, I jumped at the idea."

The mentors will be working with the students frequently over the next month to develop and refine their business plan.

C-Span Announces StudentCam 2012

C-Span is sponsoring a competition geared towards increasing both student awareness of government as well as student involvement in video production. The program allows students to compete for scholarships ranging from $250 to $5000 while also earning money for their respective schools at the same time. Awards will be presented to 75 different students.

This year's theme is, “The Constitution and You: Select any provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it’s important to you.” Your documentary may focus on any section of the Preamble, Articles, or Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

The program is open to all students in grades 6-12. Students are also allowed to participate in teams of up to 3 individuals. Student documentaries must be between 5-8 minutes long and contain credits or a works cited list.

This is an excellent opportunity for Warren County students. WCHS now has the camera and technology available to help any student interested to produce an award winning video. Any student who is interested in the program is encouraged to see Mr. Swann. The deadline for entry is January 20, 2012. More information can be found at http://www.studentcam.org/.

Warren County is pleased to recognize a group of students for their outstanding work in the classroom. Twelve students were honored for having all "A's" for the first half of the second nine week grading period. Each student was awarded coupons to Side Street Pizzeria in Warrenton for their hard work. The students were also given the right to deviate from the school uniform for the upcoming week.

WCHS Students Attend College Fair

Warren County Juniors and Seniors attended a college fair along with students from other schools in the CSRA Saturday, September 24 at the James Brown Arena in Augusta. For some, the day was their first chance to speak face-to-face to representatives from a college that they are interested in attending. For others, the day marked the first time they had even thought about going to college.

Students spent the day going from booth to booth gathering information about the different colleges. Some students even went so far as to begin the application process with colleges that interested them the most. For all, the day marked the beginning of transitioning from the comfort of high school to the excitement of their college career.

WCHS Begins Student Broadcasting Program

For about five years, Warren County football fans have been able to keep up with all the Friday night action on WTHO and through the internet when they have not been able to attend the game. This year fans are also able to enjoy the video of the games through the school's live video stream as well.

The video broadcast is just one step towards what will hopefully be a fully student driven and produced broadcasting program at Warren County High School. "Advances in technology have really made broadcasting much easier and more affordable," states Scott Swann, faculty sponsor of the broadcasting program at WCHS. Swann adds, "The broadcasts are also an excellent way to increase community support for the school as well."

The state of Georgia also recognizes the trend of high schools incorporating broadcasting into their school's curriculum. The state now has a Broadcasting Journalism pathway with four approved courses in place for schools to teach to students interested in the broadcasting field. Swann commented, "The broadcasting field is wide open right now with the rapid increase in the number of TV channels and the growth of web based content." Many schools understand that and are responding to the students interest in the field by establishing broadcasting labs that rival many studios at the local networks.

WCHS hopes to grow their broadcast to include a daily school news broadcast as well as all sporting events and special events such as coronation and the Grand March for the prom. "I really hope that we can develop a program that will allow students to take over all aspects of the broadcast to include the on-air person, the production personnel, and the set crew," states Swann.

Chat and Chew With Dr. Preston

Dr. Preston hosts Chat & Chew with the community.

With a new principal often comes new ideas. One new program that has been quickly implemented by new Warren County principal, Dr. Kaveous Preston, is Chat and Chew.

Chat and Chew is a monthly gathering sponsored by Dr. Preston that encourages members of the community, business leaders, and parents to come to the school for an update on what is going on in the school. The meeting is always held at lunch and includes lunch at no charge to those who attend.

Another key element of the program is that it allows members of the community to ask questions and to make suggestions about ways to improve the school. According to Preston, "One of our main goals is to improve community involvement. Chat and Chew helps to instill the idea that the participants are true stakeholders in our school."

The Chat and Chew program is in only it's second month, but may have already outgrown it's location. Dr. Preston noted that he may have to find a different room for next month's meeting if more people show up. Preston stated, "We'll find the room and order the food for anyone who wants to attend."

Chat and Chew is held on the first Friday of every month from 11:00-12:00. Anyone interested in learning more about what is happening at Warren County High School is welcome to attend.

21st Century Family Literacy Sponsors Diabetes Program

The Warren County 21st Century Family Literacy and Activity Center is off to a great start for the new school year. The center has a new home this year and is now located in room 219 at Warren County High School. The room is being prepared to allow parents and community partners an opportunity to come during the day for extended learning activities and informative discussion sessions on various topics.

Turnout was better than expected for the Family Literacy Center's first program of the new school year. Ms. Caroline Richardson from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension met with 19 parents and community partners for an informative discussion on the challenges of diabetes. The program was sponsored by Side Street Pizzeria, Ryan's in Thomson, and the Garden Gazebo. A light lunch followed the program.

The Family Literacy and Activity Center plans even more informative programs for parents and community members. Program coordinator, Wanda Jenkins, encourages all members of the community who might be interested to become involved. FCA (Fellowships of Christian Athletes) participated in Operation Christmas Child (OCC) nov.16-23 at Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga... The drive is sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse.

People who participate fill a shoe box with gifts like toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy, and anything else their heart leads them to give. Some families may enclose a note to the child and a photo. Also, the family also sends a donation to cover shipping costs.

Coach Blount, Coach Moon, and Coach Shirey took about 30 members of the WCHS chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes to Warren Baptist Church Thursday, Nov. 19 around 9:00 in the morning. They quickly got started working after they heard the instructions. Everyone lent a helping hand when it came to unloading boxes, making shoe boxes, and packing shipping boxes. Warren County students loaded about two or three trucks throughout the day.

The shoe boxes travel to different countries year to year all over the world.

WCHS Holds Annual Blood Drive

A special thank you goes out to all those, within the school and community that helped prove Warren County is truly a giving community. On Wednesday, November 11, Warren County High School's SkillsUSA chapter sponsored the first of two blood drives that will be held at the school this year.

Almost 50 students, faculty members, staff, and community citizens answered the call to give the gift of life. Each person went through the screening process that eliminated those who might be ineligible to donate for any number of reasons. 26 units of blood were actually collected, potentially saving as many as 78 lives.

SkillsUSA officers were on site in Ms. Strait's room to provide assistance to Shepeard Community Blood Center. Students assisting in the blood drive were: President Carrie Vallery, Vice President Tyneisha Grier, Secretary Najaliqua Bradshaw, Treasurer Ralph Callahan, Reporter Kaleshia Williams, and Parliamentarian Sa'sha Nealey.

WCHS will hold a second blood drive in the spring. Anyone interested in giving the gift of life is encouraged to participate.

WCHS captures 2nd place in One-Act

Warren County High School returned to One-Act Play competition this year and captured 2nd place in the Region 7 competition held in the Holliman Auditiorium at Warren County High School Thursday night. Warren County presented Asylum, a play about the disorders of a group of people in a mental hospital.

Four schools competed in the region competition. Schools presenting plays this year included Warren County, Glascock County, Lincoln County, and Wilkinson County. Region secretary, Jeannie Smith, was pleased with the turnout across the region this year. "Last year we only one school to compete. It's exciting to see that we can have a real competition this year. Hopefully the competition will continue to grow," stated Smith.

Lincoln County captured the region title with their performance of This is a Test. Warren County's performance of Asylum earned them the region runner-up award. Glascock County placed third in the region with their performance of The Last Leaf. Wilkinson County, the only school to enter a play last year, finished fourth with their performance of Last Chance.

Scott Richardson, director for Warren County, could not have been prouder of the performance turned in by his cast and crew. "This year was a learning experience for our team. We came a long way this year and to capture second place greatly exceeds any expectation I had going into this competition," commented Richardson. Mr. Richardson also expressed his thanks to those who helped with the production. "This was my first experience in dealing with any type of dramatic production. I really want to thank all those who helped us pull this off, especially Ms. Barbara Arnold. There is no way we would have done as good as we did without her experience and her insight."

DeVante Starks, of Lincoln County was named Best Actor for the region for his performance of Luke in This is a Test and Jennifer Dandron, also of Lincoln County, was named best actress for the region for her portrayal of Allison.

Brontavius Cowins was named Warren County Best Actor for his portrayal as Kevin in Warren County's performance. Carrie Vallery was named Warren County Best Actress from Warren County as well for her performance as Tracey.

Warren County earns Distinguished Achievement Award

Warren County High School received notice from the state school superintendent that they have been earned the Superintendent's Distinguished Achievement Award.

These awards are designed to honor schools that have scored at the highest level or made the greatest improvement in performance on the state curriculum exams. Schools are being awarded in all core academic areas across several grades. There are two categories of awards:

Achievement: The 10 schools with the highest percentage of students in the exceeds score level.

Improvement: The 10 schools with the greatest gains in the percentage of students in the meets and exceeds scoring levels.

Warren County High School has been presented the award by the state for improvement on the End-of-Course test scores in American Literature and Composition. Ms. Lindsey Sherrouse, American Literature teacher, was notified of the award at the homecoming pep rally Friday.

Ms. Sherrouse was also named Warren County High School's teacher of the quarter for the first 9 weeks. Congratulations go out to Ms. Sherrouse and her students for being named among the top 10 schools in the state.

Homecoming 2009 has come to an end in Warren County. The ballots have been counted, the game has been won, and the school is pleased to report that the week’s festivities were a great success!

Mr. and Miss WCHS were crowned at the annual Coronation Wednesday night. The school is honored to announce Mr. Javier Lowe and Miss Tynisha Harris as Mr. and Miss WCHS for the 09-10 school year. Mr. Lowe plays on the Screaming Devil varsity football team. Miss Harris serves as a varsity cheerleader and plays on the varsity Lady Devils basketball team as well.

The homecoming king and queen were crowned Friday night at halftime of the homecoming game. Quiet fell over the crowd in the moments preceding the crowning of the king and queen. Dr. Bishop principal of Warren County High School broke the silence by announcing that sophomore, Corterrius Johnson, and a senior, Candice Warthen would take home the title.

Homecoming in full swing at WCHS

2009 homecoming activities are in full swing at Warren County High School. Spirit is high among students and faculty alike. The week long activities will culminate with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen at the game Friday night.

Each day of the week of homecoming has a different theme and Monday was sports day at WCHS. Students and faculty members came to school wearing the jersey of their favorite sports team or athelete. The day was capped off with the annual powder puff contest.

The senior and freshmen girls combined to take on the junior and sophomore girls in this year's powder puff game. Senior varsity football player, Tay Erwin, served as coach for the senior/freshman team. Coaches for the junior/sophomore team included Coby Reynold (head coach), Dextrell Norris, and Tobias Latimore. Coach Marleau Blount, Coach Terry Stephens, and Coach Joey Moon served as officials for the night's game.

Every football game has to have cheerleaders, and this year's game was no different. Members of the Screaming Devil football team took to the sidelines as cheerleaders in support of both teams. Cheerleaders for the powder puff game included Dominique Menchaca, Cedric Bacon, Kalip Allen, Frank Ivey, Corneilus Pinkston, and Ed' Ricus Williams. The cheerleaders were coached by Akirra Hill, Jashanna Graves, and Briaunna Franklin.

The Junior/sophomore team jumped out to an early lead when Ty Johnson scored on a 60 yard touchdown run. Candice Warthen answered for the Senior/Freshman team with a 70 yard touchdown run of her own to tie the game at 6-6.

The game remained tied until the later part of the last period. Tianca Evans, a sophomore, scored from the one yard line to give the Junior/Sophomore team a 12-6 lead. Candice Warthen again answered the score by Evans with a 30 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 12-12.

Neither team was able to score in the closing minutes and the game ended in a tie.

Homecoming activities continued on Tuesday with the annual Tacky Day. Students and staff wore their tackiest attire to school in to show their school spirit.

FFA jumps into 2009

The Warren County High FFA chapter is once again leading the way for student organizations on campus. FFA, under the sponsorship of Jesse Dawson, held a Leadership Camp this past July for select students. The camp would kick off what Dawson hopes is a successful school year for the organization.

Mr. Dawson asked three simple but challenging questions to those who participated. "Who am I? What do I want my life to be like? How do I get to my career goals? These are questions that all leaders should ask themselves," stated Dawson.

FFA leaders spent the next few days researching career choices, creating resumes, looking at Warren county demographic statistics, and planning for the new FFA year. When asked how she thinks the FFA organization will be this year, FFA president Kimberly Ivey said, "Great. I'm really excited to be a part of FFA this year."

Ms. Strait’s Healthcare Science class participated in a demonstration on fire extinguishers last week given by Warren County Fire and EMA. Students were able to practice the necessary steps of putting out small fires. Students had the opportunity to practice the PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) method. Students also enjoyed a tour of the ambulance. Thank you to Mr. Tommy Wolfe and Ms. Nicki Thigpen for their time and effort to provide the students with this great training.

Students from Mrs. Mitchell’s anatomy class and Ms. Strait’s healthcare science class recently enjoyed a unique experience. 30 students were able to visit Bodies…The Exhibition in Atlanta Monday. This exhibit allows students to study and analyze over 250 real specimens related to all body systems. This was the second year that Mrs. Mitchell’s anatomy class was able to make the trip.

Students were also given the opportunity to feel what it is like to be totally blind. Students toured the Dialog in the Dark Exhibit. This is an amazing exhibit with obstacles and challenges that the visually impaired face every day. Some were scared, but most came out with a newfound respect for those that are visually impaired. Students were able to meet the visually impaired guides at the end and ask questions about their life without sight.

WCHS Holds Enchanted Evening

The Junior Class of Warren County High School hosted their annual Junior/Senior Prom April 25. The Junior Class presented An Enchanted Evening as the theme for this year's prom. Health Occupations teacher, Lacy Strait, sponsored the prom for the second consecutive year.

The evening began with the annual grand march. Prom attendees were presented to a standing room only audience in the Holliman auditorium. Each participant in the grand march was introduced by last year's Ms. WCHS, Sharane Johnson.

Students moved to the cafeteria for the prom at the conclusion of the grand march. Eugene Andrews was crowned the prom king and Tyneshia Tolbert was crowned prom Queen. After the announcement of the king and queen, students began to head for the after-hours parties.

Students adopt a highway

Vocational students at Warren County have committed themselves to helping keep Warren County clean as one of their service projects this year. Business, nursing, and agriculture students recently adopted a one mile stretch of highway in front of the the school and have pledged to keep it litter free.

The Adopt-a-Highway program began in Texas in 1985 as a way to help control litter on public roads. The program has now spread to many other states and even to some other countries.

Highway litter poses several problems. Litter can blow into the road and create dangerous driving conditions for motorists. Litter can also pose a threat to wildlife by exposing them to small plastic items that can be ingested and cause a health hazard. Litter can pose an environmental hazard as toxic chemicals can leak into soil or water as containers decompose.

Lastly, highway litter is unsightly and does not attract tourists. In many states today, tourism is big business and communities want to present their best appearance to tourists who drive on the state highways.

WCHS students want to encourage you to do your part in helping to control the litter on the roads in our community by keeping your trash inside your vehicle until you can dispose of it in a trash can.

WCHS students lend a helping hand

Missing the school bus turned into an opportunity to help a fellow citizen Monday for three Warren County High School brothers. Ricky Jones Jr., Ricardo Jones, and Rictavious Jones displayed the kind of character that Warren County High School strives to instill in students when they helped to rescue a wheelchair bound citizen from a water filled ditch.

All three brothers missed the bus to school Monday. Ricardo called family friend and neighborhood mentor, Jimmie Landers, to take them to school since their parents had already left for work. Landers is retired from the U.S. Marine Corp and serves his community as a mentor to young people.

Landers stated that he noticed a car coming towards them and a man in a wheelchair, Mr. Bosie Bass, rolling at the edge of the street. Bass was forced off the road as the car got closer and tumbled from his chair and into a water filled ditch.

Mr. Landers immediately stopped his vehicle and all three Jones brothers quickly jumped out to help. Ricky Jones stated, "I thought he was dead at first. Then I realized he was alive and could not move. I tried to keep his face out of the water so that he did not drown." Ricky went on to say, "I wasn't worried about getting wet or messing up my shoes or clothes. I was only concerned with saving a life because I know how precious life is."

Mr. Landers also credits the unnamed driver of the other vehicle as well as Mr. Danny Williams in assisting with rescuing Mr. Bass. "The ditch was fairly deep. We probably would not have noticed him down there if we had not seen him go into the ditch. We needed their help to get him back up on the road."

When asked if he considered himself a hero, Landers replied, "Not really. We just did what any person would do." Rictavious answered the same question by saying, "God just put us in the right place at the right time. We may have never seen him if we came by a few minutes earlier or later and things would have been much worse for him (Bass)."

Shontier Barnes, assistant principal at Warren County High School, presented each student with a certificate Wednesday for their actions. Joining them were Mr. Landers and their father, Ricky Jones Sr..

Warren County Celebrates Space Week

Warren County Schools began a week long celebration of the space program this week. NASA works with school systems to promote the space program and to encourage young people to take an interest in science and space. As part of the program, two representatives of NASA visited Warren County schools this week.

Mr. Gold and Dr. Morales spent all day Monday visiting Warren County High School. They shared a little of the history of the space program as well as the future plans of NASA. According to Gold, "NASA plans to return to the moon in the year 2015 to prepare for a possible trip to Mars in 2030."

Students were also surprised to learn that many of the items that we take for granted in our everyday life were developed from the space program. One invention that is being created today for the Mars missions will hopefully dramatically change the detection and treatment of cancer here on earth.

Mr. Gold and Dr. Morales are scheduled to spend the rest of the week visiting the middle and elementary schools in Warrenton.

Finding out just how it all works

Students in Mr. Swann's first period Computing in the Modern World class recently began a unit that gets to the heart of the modern computer. Most people today know how to turn a computer on, surf the Internet, and use basic software programs. The new state curriculum for computers challenges students to take it one step further.

One of the new Georgia Performance Standards for computing requires students to demonstrate a knowledge of the internal workings of a computer. Mr. Swann and his students recently began taking the covers off the computer and exploring the inside.

Students have moved beyond Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. They are now discovering what exactly makes a computer work. Students are identifying items such as power supplies, motherboards, data cables, processing chips, RAM chips, and expansion slots. One of the required tasks is to be able to assemble the components of a computer and to be able to connect all the required cables.

"Many of the students show a good deal of interest in what actually makes a computer work", said Swann. "I was really surprised by how much some all ready knew. There are a few that may be on the way to a high paying career in computer technology."

Black history celebrated at Warren County Middle & High

Warren County Middle & High School held their annual Black History Program Friday in the Holliman Auditorium. The celebration kicks off a month of study, celebration, and recognition of the contributions of African Americans to the history of the United States.

Friday's program featured many students, community members, and Dr. Roger Williams as guest speaker. Dr. Williams is a former principal of Warren County High School.

The program featured several several Warren County students. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Sulgun Bekniyazova and the African Pledge was led by Nicholas Hudson. The Warren County Voices, a musical group made up of WCHS students then performed for the audience. Members of the group include Mykeia Carter, Bianca Ficklin, Deshawn Ficklin, Abril Heath, and Darius Williams. Tyneisha Grier also performed by singing Precious Lord for the audience.

Shantana Moss and Tyeisha Tanksley each performed poems by Maya Angelou. Moss recited I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Tanksley followed with Still I Rise.

The Warren County cheerleaders presented a skit that encouraged students to "Believe in yourself." Members of the squad portrayed famous African-American women and their contributions.

Jessica Green and Eugene Andrews took the stage to read excerpts from two famous speeches. Green read from Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech followed by Andrews' interpretation of President Obama's inaugural address.

The Warren County Arts Group, a musical group made up of members of the community, then took the stage to perform for the audience.

Dr. Roger Williams then took the stage for his keynote address. He was accompanied by Ms. Fluellen Williams. Ms. Williams performed several songs at strategic points in Williams' speech. Each selection was met with a rousing ovation from the audience.

Dr. Williams encouraged the student body to have hope for a brighter future and to take pride in themselves, their school, and their community.

This year's Black History Program was organized by Ms. Lindsey Sherrouse.

Warren County High School proudly announces STAR Student

Bianca Ficklin has been named the 2009 STAR student for Warren County High School. The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) coordinates the statewide STAR program in association with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.

To obtain the STAR nomination, high school students must meet or exceed the national average score on all three parts of the SAT, have the highest score on the SAT through November of their senior year, and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. High school STAR students then compete for system titles; and system STAR students in turn compete for region-wide honors in the 12 STAR Regions. Region winners and their STAR teachers are invited to Atlanta to compete for the state STAR scholarships and awards.

Each high school STAR student is asked to name his/her STAR teacher. Mr. Walt Watson has been chosen by Ms. Ficklin as her STAR teacher. Mr. Watson teaches math at Warren County High School and was chosen by Ficklin for her love of math.

WCHS Holds Annual Career Day

Warren County Middle/High School hosted their H.O.P.E. and P.R.I.D.E. Career Week on Monday, January 12, 2009 through Friday, January 16, 2009. Participants included guest speakers on the Friday Career Day from 8:15 am – 11:00 am representing a large variety of careers and occupations. Student and teachers were able to visit a particular speaker during each of the four sessions.

The week long celebration offered students the opportunity to express themselves through participation in the daily themes. Students were allowed to dress to represent the theme for that day. Monday was College Day and students could wear their favorite college’s colors or paraphernalia. Tuesday was Tacky Day and students dressed to represent how not to dress for a professional career. On Wednesday, Professional Day, students demonstrated how to dress for a professional career. Thursday was School Spirit Day and students wore Warren County High School paraphernalia and school colors of Blue and Gold. For Friday, Career Day, students dressed to represent their chosen career.

It has often been said by many that it takes a village to raise a child. The children of Warren County Middle/High School were fortunate to have the opportunity to benefit from the valuable expertise and caring guidance of several career speakers. Guest speakers included Warren County Probate Judge Janice Thigpen, Jackie Lowe-Johnson, RN, Warrenton Health and Rehab, Attorney Kedrick N. Eily an Associate with Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, Navy Petty Officer Jesse Cobb, Alexander Ingram, Owner/Director of Dawson Mortuary, Inc., Larry Gordon, Records & Information Manager for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., and Reginald Baldwin, President Reginald B. Baldwin & Associates and also Sr. Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kens Mechanical Services, Inc.

The Warren County Police Department was also represented by Chief Jim McClain, Officer Patricia Kendrick-Walker, Deputy Sammy Purvis, and Sgt. William Walker (Ret). The Communities In Schools local affiliate, Quality of Life Association, provided lunch for the guest speakers from a local favorite Kendrick’s Barbeque.

The first H.O.P.E. and P.R.I.D.E. Career Week was a tremendous success and well received by students and guest speakers. Many teachers and guest speakers expressed interest in continuing to provide this type of experience for students. Career Week may well become an annual event.

President Barack Obama

I believe that some of the students at our school are mistaken in the way they view President Barack Obama. I think that some of the kids at our school see President Obama as just an African-American President, but that is not the reason he got elected.

President Obama was elected because he said that he could make a change in our county. President Obama wants to return our country to the principles that the world has come to associate with the United States of America. President Obama wants to truly make us a nation of one.

I believe that President Obama can make the changes that he wants to enact, but he can't do it alone. He needs our help to make our country a stronger nation. President Obama wants to be the president for all of the people, not just African-Americans. With our help, I believe he can do it.

Warren County Middle & High Gather for Inauguration

Warren County Middle and High School students gathered together in the Holliman Auditorium today to watch history being made with the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Obama became the first African American President and was sworn in shortly after 12:00 noon.

The morning's program began around 9:30 with a welcome by Larissa Hudson and invocation by Bianca Ficklin. Kentrell Latimore then delivered a few words relaying the importance of the day. Middle School student, Justin Alexander, then led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance and Mykeia Carter then sung The Star Spangled Banner.

Remarks were then offered by school principals, Ms. Ja'net Bishop and Mr. Truett Abbott. Mr. Abbott observed, "Today is the fullfillment of the American Dream for many Americans." Mr. Abbott also remarked that he was grateful to see this day after having lived through the early days of the civil rights movement.

Students and faculty were not the only people who were in attendance to watch history in the making. Members of the community also came to the school to share in the experience. Naheede Brooks commented, "I could have been somewhere else today, but I felt a need to share this day with the younger generation and to see the reaction of the kids."

When asked if she thought that she would ever see an African-American President, Annie Peterson said, "I didn't think it would ever come in my lifetime." Both Peterson and Brooks saw today as a day of hope and new beginning for America. Ms. Peterson commended both Mr. Abbott and Ms. Bishop for giving their students the opportunity to view this historic moment in the life of our nation. "We have two great principals. It was great to hear the words of Mr. Abbott and to hear what the day meant to him as well," continued Peterson.

The importance of the day was not lost on the students of Warren County. Jasmine Ruff, WCHS sophomore, said, "I think that Martin Luther King Jr. paved the way for Barack Obama, and now President Obama will pave the way for us."

Najaliqua Bradshaw expressed what the day meant to her by saying, "This day means to me that no longer does the color of your skin limit your level of success in life. Life is what you make it."

Now that the formalities are done, it is time for the real work to begin. President Obama now begins the tough job of governing and rebuilding a struggling economy and charting a new course for American foreign policy.

Warren County Students Celebrate the Season

Students from all three Warren County schools participated in the tree lighting program held last night at the courthouse in Warrenton. A good crowd turned out despite a slight rain as the Christmas season was officially ushered in for Warren County.

The program began with a few holiday selections performed by fourth and fifth grade members of the Freeman Singers from Mildred E. Freeman Elementary School. The Freeman Singers are under the direction of Ms. Kathy Gerlach and entertained the audience with songs including Christmas in Any Language, Kwanzaa, Jingle Jive, and Bright Happy Day. They also performed for the Thomson Rotary Club earlier in the day. Students audition for the choir and practice throughout the year to be ready for performances like the tree lighting ceremony.

The Warren County Middle and High School band followed the Freeman Singers with several holiday selections of their own. The event was also the debut for the band's new look as they sported their new uniforms for the first time. The band continued to play and entertain the crowd after the official lighting of the tree. Many commented about how impressed they were by not only the new look for the band, but the quality of the performance as well. The band played right up until heavier rains forced them to seek cover.

WCHS Students Build Their Own Future

2008 marks the second year for a valuable addition to the vocational offerings at Warren County High School. Last year was the first year students at WCHS were offered the opportunity to take welding through dual enrollment with Sandersville Technical College. The class has proven to be one of the most popular classes with students this year.

The welding program is taught by Mr. Gregrico Darisaw each day for two periods. The class is made possible through federal funding provided under the Perkins Act and the Hope Grant. Students are given their own helmet, jacket, gloves, and hand tools at the start of the class and are allowed to keep them upon completion of the class.

Two students from last year's program have gone on to land jobs using the skills that they learned in the welding program at WCHS. Bobby Burley is a welder with Jebco and Curtis Watley works for TRW. Warren County hopes to bring more programs to the school through Sandersville Tech that will offer students valuable job skills that they can use after high school.

College Day Held at WCHS

A record number of colleges participated in this year's annual College Day at Warren County High School. A total of 29 schools plus representatives of the armed forces descended upon the gym with their booths and information for students interested in furthering their education.

The annual event is sponsored by the guidance department and is a valuable asset in helping students make decisions about their life after high school. Schools represented included four year institutions, junior colleges, technical schools and the military as well.

The guidance department would like to thank Ms. Murray for her help in this year's event.

FFA Conducts Annual Toy, Food, & Clothing Drive

The WCHS FFA chapter's annual service project to help provide clothing, food, and toys to less fortunate families at Christmas is once again in full force. 2008 marks the 5th year for the drive for the local FFA chapter.

The program encourages all 1st period classes to donate toys, canned food, or clothing. A box is placed in each classroom and FFA members gather the donations each afternoon. A wall in the hallway is used to total the collections by classroom and the class that donates the most is treated to pizza at the end of the drive.

Cloning Takes Root at WCHS

The Warren County High School chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA) is on the cutting edge of agriculture science. They've done a remarkable job of using biotechnology to clone plants for the past four years.

Cloning is accomplished by taking a cutting from a plant, placing it in a medium and forcing it to root on its own with the help of rooting hormones. The cloning program began at WCHS with African Violets and quickly expanded to include Venus Fly Traps, Boston Ferns, Hosta, Miniature Roses, carrots, and others.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) helped jump start the program by providing a grant to buy the equipment needed for the program. Dr. Curtis Borne, a professor with Fort Valley State University, provided samples of parent plants, supplies like rooting hormone, and lab equipment such as microscopes, test tubes, and heating domes.

The cloning and biotechnology program at Warren County High has a high success rate with the help of participating FFA members and sponsor Jesse Dawson. Many of the plants are sold in the spring during the annual greenhouse sale to help fund FFA projects throughout the year.

WCHS Teacher Takes Time to Care

Jesse Dawson has spent a lifetime caring about his students. There's simply not enough time for him to get everything done that he cares about. Mr. Dawson has been a fixture in the Vocational Department at Warren County High School for years. His love for the school and it's students is evidenced through the time and care that he puts into many of the events and activities held throughout the year.

Mr. Dawson was surprised in his room by Superintendent Carey and Richard Rogers of News Channel 12 last Tuesday. Both were on hand to award Mr. Dawson the Time-To-Care award for his service to the school. Also on hand for the award was Mr. Dawson's wife and his own vocational teacher, Mr. Bacon.

Mr. Dawson graduated from Warren County High School. He began his teaching career in 1980. Dawson returned to teach at his Alma mater in 1995 and has been here ever since. Mr. Dawson teaches agriculture education and is the advisor for the local FFA organization. FFA is the most active student organization at WCHS.

Mr. Dawson and his students also spend countless hours preparing for many events throughout the school year. Whether it be building props for the prom or providing plants for an assembly, Mr. Dawson and his students go the extra mile.

Rogers asked Dawson how he felt about the award. Mr. Dawson replied, "I just enjoy working with the kids. Everything I try and do, I do for them."

Faculty Spotlight: Ms. Hillman

The 2008 school year brought a familiar face to Warren County Middle and High School. Candice Hillman joined the counseling department as an intern in order to fulfill her program requirements with Troy State University. Working with Warren County Middle and High School has been a sort of homecoming for Ms. Hillman.

Ms. Hillman was born in Augusta and raised in Warren County, where she attended school. She has one sister and one brother and is the youngest in her family. Hillman states, "I hate using the word "baby" and being called that in the family." She is also single with no children.

Ms. Hillman was a cheerleader, a member of the debate and literary teams, and a member of FBLA and chorus during her time as a student at WCHS. She went on to Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville where she earned a bachelor degree in sociology. Hillman is currently working on her Master's in Counseling Psychology with a concentration on community counseling. She also works part-time at Bath and Body Works in Augusta.

Ms.Hillman loves to read. Her favorite author is Stephanie Perry Moore. She's also a die-hard sports fan and loves to go to football games. Her other interests include shopping , surfing the internet, singing, and hanging out with her friends.

Ms. Hillman is actively involved with her church and serves as a Sunday School teacher.

Warren County Students Receive Flu Vaccine

Students from Warren County Middle and High School took advantage of a program sponsored by Emory University to receive the flu vaccine free of charge Monday. The program was prefaced with an assembly held Friday to give students information about the vaccine and the different options available to students.

Several Warren County students took part in the assembly on Friday as they portrayed characters in a short play about the flu vaccine. Dr. Sales and her staff then took questions from those in attendance. They also described the difference in the flu shot and the flu mist. Students were encouraged to participate in the flu vaccination to be held the following Monday.

Students lined up for the vaccination Monday morning. Some preferred the mist form of the vaccine while others preferred the shot. The vaccine was made available to students as well as teachers, staff, and family members. Those who received the flu vaccine also got a t-shirt designed by Warren County High student, Cortez Dawson.

The flu mist is a fast and painless alternative to the flu shot. Both forms of delivery are equally effective in preventing the flu. Students with asthma were not eligible to receive the flu mist and had to opt for the flu shot.

Thanks to Emory University to providing the flu vaccine free of charge to Warren County students.

Students Recognized for Excellent Work

A referral used to be something that most students did their best to avoid. That is not necessarily the case this year at Warren County High School. WCHS has instituted a new type of referral this year to recognize the outstanding achievements of students. Students can earn a Recognition Referral for excelling on a test, exceptional classwork, service to the school or community, or any other outstanding work that a teacher or administrator deems worthy.

M.E. Freeman Elementary Pledges to be Drug Free

Mildred E. Freeman Elementary School held their drug free program on October 31. Many students also got an early start on the evenings festivities as they wore their Halloween costumes to school. The afternoon program featured poems and skits performed by several students. Freeman Elementary also used the program as a chance to honor several teachers and students for their achievement in the classroom.

Students from every grade took to the stage to perform skits, poems, raps, and cheers celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Tyson Curry, J'Merrious Jackson, Jarkevin Clark, James Jackson, and Trevarus Hill, all fourth grade students at Freeman Elementary wrote and performed the following poem for the students:

If you see somebody with them just walk away.

Several students and teachers were honored for their accomplishments following the program. Mrs. Alicia Dressel and Ms. Julie Reese had their classes' recognized for winning the door decorating contest. Ms. Sylvia Hixson was honored as the grade chair of the grade with the highest average participation in dress up days during the week. Lonquavious Daniels was also recognized for having the highest AR points with an 80 or above average in the first grade.

For their efforts, Ms. Hixson and Lonquavious each had the oppportunity to treat principle Tony Hill to a pie in the face.

Students Writing Test Scores Improve

Scores from the Georgia High School Writing Test were released Wednesday afternoon. Students were called to the media center where they waited anxiously for Ms. Barnes to pass out the scores. Most let out a sigh of relief when the annoucement was made that 84% had passed the test. The fall 2007 test saw only a 69% passing rate for Warren County.

Students quickly began to emerge from the media center after the scores were passed out. Most had smiles on their faces. Some were too scared to look at their results. Some reacted with uncontrolled joy at passing the first of the tests mandated in order to recieve a high school diploma in Georgia. Others were more restrained as they realized that there are still four more tests to pass before they complete all their requirements.

Ivery Speaks for Red Ribbon Week

Mr. Eddie Lee Ivery spoke to Warren County Middle and High students Friday in an assembly that brought about an end to Red Ribbon Week for Warren County. Red Ribbon Week is used to promote drug and alcohol awareness among young people at the school.

Ivery spoke of his own experiences as a student growing up in Thomson, Georgia. Even though he was already a star on the athletic field in his home town, the seeds to his addiction were already being sown. Ivery began using alcohol at a very young age.

Ivery stated that it was with the Green Bay Packers that his alcohol use advanced to harder drugs. Ivery states, "Drugs don't care if you are rich or poor, black or white, man or woman.....". He went on to say that drugs and alcohol almost cost him his life.

Ivery concluded by saying now that he is free from alcohol and drugs, he is happier than at any other time in his life. The student body responded to Ivery's message by giving him a standing ovation.

Susan Newsome, chairperson of the Red Ribbon Committee, then took the stage to present a proclamation to Emma Sinkfield.

Warren County Students Participate in Electoral Process

The 2008 election was not only historic for the nation, but memorable for many Warren County High School students who were eligible to vote for the first time. Some students voted early in order to avoid the lines while others waited until actual election day in order to get the full experience of casting their ballot for the first time. Some students and recent graduates even served their community as poll workers on election day as well.

Lashandria Reynolds, a senior at Warren County High, works part-time at the Warren County courthouse in the Youth Apprenticeship Program. Reynolds' main duties at the courthouse include working with death certificates and filing civil cases.

Her participation in the program also gave Reynolds an up-close look at what is involved behind the scenes in an election when her normal day's work at the courthouse stretched well into the evening. Reynolds assisted in the counting of absentee ballots as the votes were tallied from throughout the county. "The election was a lot of hard work and much more involved than I ever thought it was."

2006 Warren County graduate, Kenvoris Blair, spent election day serving as a poll worker at the Ricketson polling station on the Wrens Highway. Blair stated, "Turnout was heavy. We normally have 12 to 13 turn out to vote and this year we had 131."

Middle School Honors Student Achievement

Warren County Middle School held an assembly in the Holliman Auditorium Wednesday afternoon to honor students for outstanding academic achievement during the first nine weeks. Students were honored in various categories including reading, math, science, language arts, social studies, connections, and attendance.

A number of students were recognized for their achievement in the Accelerated Reader program. Taking top honors among the girls was Catrice Williams, followed by Talisha Johnson, Shaniquia Myrick, Jamika Dawson, and Aaliyah Jackson.

Davion Williams took top honors for the boys in the Accelerated Reader program. He was joined in the top five by Chance Lee, Justin Alexander, Tony Alexander, and Quontavious Battle.

Ms. Jamie Baxley's class led all classes in Accelerated Reader points with a 283.1 total. Ms. Keshia Pryor's class was second with 261.8 points. Coming in third was Ms. Francine Pearce's class with 234.2 points.

Warren County Band Keeps Fans Rocking

Under the direction of Mr. Scott Richardson, the Symphonic Soul of the South, more commonly known as the WCHS Screamin’ Devils Marching Band, has really developed since the opening football game. The band has performed crowd-pleasing half-time shows and bleacher-rattling stand performances at pep rallies, every home game, and a few away games.

The S.S.O.S has made countless outstanding performances at other recent events as well. Our very own Screamin’ Devils Band gave a marvelous performance at the recently held Battle of the Bands competition at Laney Stadium. The S.S.O.S also recently visited Sparta for the Pine Tree Festival. On October 25, the S.S.O.S graced the streets of downtown Sparta and blessed the ears of residents with their beautiful sounds.

The band became a beautiful ensemble as they gave a breath-taking and moving performance at the dedication of the stadium in memory of Mr. Albert J. Massey. They played a beautiful selection entitled “Praise is What I Do”. They received a standing ovation for their beautiful performance. Their performance left the strongest at heart in tears.

The band performed at the signing of the proclamation to be drug free which was held at the courthouse in downtown Warrenton. The band delivered another great performance featuring a selection entitled “Rough Riders”. They also played a favorite old school song, “September”. They rocked the courthouse!

Next on their agenda is the upcoming Battle of the Bands on November 1st. Please come out to support your family and friends in the band.

Teacher Spotlight: Lacey Strait

Ms. Strait has been teaching Health Occupations at Warren County High School for three years. Her kind, loving, and caring attitude helps make her one of the favorite teachers at WCHS. She works with all her students to make sure everyone understands everything. I like going to this class. We do a lot of first aid, and hands on things, like: CPR, bed making, rescue emergencies, etc..

Ms. Strait is the oldest of three children. She grew up in Thomson, Georgia. She attended high school in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Strait also attended Augusta College, Dekalb College, paramedic school, and fire fighting training. She has been named the Paramedic of the Year for her efforts with the Cherokee County emergency response team.

She enjoys bowling, hunting, fishing, and riding four wheelers in her spare time. The three most proudest moments of her life are the birth of her two children, Blair and Collin, her daughter being named Salutatorian of her high school class, and the day her daughter graduated.

7th Grade Students attend "The Super Scientific Circus"

On Wednesday, October 22nd, the 7th Grade Team of Warren County Middle School embarked upon their first trip of the year. The students and teachers of the 7th grade team loaded the school bus and went to Augusta, Georgia to learn more about Science from The Super Scientific Circus. The show was at the historical Imperial Theater. The Super Scientific Circus showed students how science affects everyday life. The show included interactive demonstrations such as, boomerangs, bubbles, bullwhips and more.

Warren County Kicks off Red Ribbon Week

Warren County Schools kicked off Red Ribbon Week Friday with a ceremony at the courthouse proclaiming October 27-31 Red Ribbon Week in Warren County. On hand for the proclamation was chairman of the Warren County Commission, John Graham.

The Warren County Concert Band was on hand and played a couple of selections for those in attendance.

Red Ribbon Week is co-sponsored by the driver's education program at Warren County High School. Scott Richardson, director of the driver's education programs stated, "One of our main goals in starting the program was to aid in promotion of drug and alcohol awareness among our student and how the use of alcohol and drugs is the number one cause of traffic accidents."

Red Ribbon Week will conclude with an assembly on Friday. Keynote speaker for the event will be former football great, Eddie Lee Ivery.

WCHS Names Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Warren County High School is proud to announce that Ms. La'Porisha Franklin has been named the valedictorian and Mr. Albert Hudson has been named the salutatorian of the class of 2008.

Franklin is the daughter of Ms. Janice Franklin and Mr. Kenny Bell. She plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall and major in business administration. La'Porisha cites her sister as one of her major influences during her high school career. "She kept pushing and encouraging me to do my best in school.", says Franklin.

Mr. Hudson is the son of Tonya Hudson. He will be attending Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia and major in computer engineering.

Nealey named top para professional for Warren Middle

Warren County Middle School is proud to announce the 2007-2008 Paraprofessional of the Year, Mrs. Vonita Hall Nealey.

Mrs. Nealey is a native of Warren County and has been employed with the Warren County School system for ten years. Nealey has volunteered hers services in many capacities over the years. She is currently the special education paraprofessional, but her services go far beyond her job description.

Mrs. Nealey is the daughter of the late Vera W. Hall. She is married to Donald Nealey and they have one daughter, Sasha.

In addition to her duties at Warren County Middle School, Mrs. Nealey is a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Warrenton where she is also a member of the choir.

WCHS participates in Veterans History Project

Warren County High School is proud to announce that they will be participating in the Veterans History Project sponsored by The Library of Congress. The Veterans History Project is an attempt to interview and record as many veterans of WWII as possible. The project encourages students to conduct the interviews as a way of relaying a part of the history of the Greatest Generation to the younger generation.

Any and all veterans that are interested in participating are encouraged to call Scott Swann at Warren County High School at (706) 465-3742. Interviews can be conducted either at the veterans home or at the school. Each interview will last forty-five minutes to an hour.

All participants will be given a video copy of the interview. A copy will also be sent to the Library of Congress where they will be catalogued and made available to researchers for study. You can go to www.loc.gov/vets for more information.

WCHS Seniors Serve in General Assembly

Five Warren County High School students got a first hand look at our state legislature at work when they served as pages in Atlanta. Aquanette Beausejour, Shandriah Walker, Je'Lisa Williams, Eddie Scott, and James Wilburn accompanied Superintendent Carey to the Capital on March 18. While there, they served as pages for Senator Jackson.

As a page, the students main responsibility was to take notes to senators while they were on the floor of the legislature. According to Beausejour, "It was a great learning experience to actually see how the senators handle certain bills and meet with different associations to get things done."

Shandria Walker also accomplished one of her personal goals of getting a picture with the Governor. Walker noticed the Governor walking toward the capital and asked him to take a picture with her.

The students had the opportunity to eat lunch with Senator Jackson after the work day was done. Each student was given a certificate of thanks for their service.

Warren County Middle honors academic achievement

Students, faculty, family, and members of the community gathered to recognize the students of Warren County Middle School last night for their achievements in the classroom this year. Awards were also presented to the teacher-of-the-year, parapro-of-the-year and parent-of-the-year.

Many students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were awarded certificates and medals for their accomplishments in reading, attendance, academic standing, and behavior. Jessica Wynn took the top honor for highest average for the year among 6th grade students. Receiving the same honor for the 7th grade was Demashawn Clark. Top honors for the 8th grade went to Krystle Wilburn.

Honors night also provided an opportunity to showcase the improvement made by both the WCMS choir and the WCMS band. The choir, under the direction of Warren County graduate and Freeman Elementary School parapro Kenvoris Blair, delighted the audience with two selections which included Believed. Band director, Scott Richardson, showcased the talents of the Warren County students when they took the stage. "Most of these students had never played an instrument before this year", stated Richardson. The band evoked a thunderous round of applause from the audience with their final selection of the night, I Will Follow Him, from Sister Act.

Keynote speaker, Schrendria Robinson, then delivered an inspirational address to both students and parents on what it takes to succeed. Robinson, a native of Norwood and a Warren County graduate, owns her own company that specializes in board development and training, non-profit development, grant writing, team building, and staff development. She challenged the students to "rise to the level of your competition." She also reminded them that "your competition is more than the student sitting in the row next to them. Your competition is more than the students one county over. In our global society, you are truly competing with students from all over the world." Robinson further stated, "In order to succeed in the face of so much competition, you must do your best every day."

Ms. Cynthia Lewis was honored for the Teacher-of-the-Year for Warren County Middle School for her work in the classroom as well as her work in training other teachers in the use of new educational strategies. Ms. Bonita Neeley was named Parapro-of-the-Year for WCMS. Ms. Neeley is always there when needed and fills a number of assorted roles within the school.

The final award of the evening was reserved for a very special person. The Parent-of-the-Year award was presented to Johnnie Mae Hudson. Mrs. Hudson is actually the grandparent of WCMS student Shkebia Griffin. Ms. Hudson took over the role of parent for Shkebia upon the untimely passing of her daughter, Connie Griffin, last year. Hudson was praised for her dedication and commitment to insuring that Shkebia gets the best education possible. Hudson addressed the audience after receiving her award and said, "I simply try everyday to do for Shkebia what my daughter would do if she was still with us."

Chris Sandy speaks to WCHS on dangers of DUI

Chris Sandy, an inmate with Georgia Department of Corrections, spoke to the students of Warren County High School today. Mr. Sandy silenced the audience with his story of D.U.I., the tragic results of his choice to drink and drive, and his experiences while in prison.

On April 11, 2000 at approximately 7:45 p.m., a vehicle driven by Mr. Sandy traveling on a country road outside of Atlanta crashed into an oncoming car that was making a left turn into a residential driveway. It is estimated that Chris Sandy's vehicle was traveling at a speed of 77 miles per hour. The posted speed limit on the country road was 35 miles per hour.

Chris Sandy's vehicle crashed into the oncoming car, literally cutting it into two pieces of wreckage. Both passengers in the other car were killed in the crash. Sandy was charged and later convicted on two counts of vehicular homicide by DUI and is now serving a 13 year sentence in a Georgia state prison.

Sandy has dedicated his life to speaking to young people about the dangers of drinking and driving. Mr. Sandy was only 22 years old at the time of the accident. He speaks to many high schools every year in the hopes that his message can save some young person from ever having to live through his experience.

Sandy has served 7 years of a 13 year sentence. He will be eligible for parole in April, 2010.

Health Fair comes to Warren County

Students at Warren County took a break from the classroom today to attend the annual health fair sponsored by Ms. Strait and her Health Occupations classes. Representatives were on hand from several local community health organizations.

Students had the opportunity to visit with representatives from the Warren County Health Department, Well Care, Child Care Resources, Department of Family and Children Services, and Tri-County Health System. Many students and faculty also took advantage of the free cholosteral and blood pressure testing provided by Tri County.

The Shepard Community Blood Bank was also on hand conducting a blood drive in conjunction with the health fair activities. Students, faculty, and staff stepped up to donate the gift of life throughout the day. Students from Ms. Strait's Health Occupations classes served as volunteers to help facilitate the blood drive.

A total of forty-four donors registered to give blood during the day. Twenty-eight were actually eligible to donate and completed their gift of life. All blood that is donated to the Shepard Community Blood Center stays in the C.S.R.A. and is used by all area hospitals.

WCMS Students Tour Coke

Warren County Middle School sixth grade students traveled to Atlanta on March 13, 2008, to visit the New World of Coca-Cola. Students explored the complete story including the past, present and future of the world's leading selling beverage for over 120 years.

They viewed more than 1,200 Coke artifacts from around the world that have never been displayed to the public before. The students also had the opportunity to experience many inviting and interactive exhibits such as a thrilling, multi-sensory 4-D movie and a fully functioning bottling line. They enjoyed the New World of Coca-Cola’s favorite—the tasting experience, where students were provided the opportunity to sample up to 70 different products from around the world.

Warren County’s sixth graders enjoyed the trip to Coca-Cola.

Accompanying them on the trip were their teachers: Ms. Burnett, Mr. Rhodes, Ms. Pearce, Ms. Spivey, and para-pro Mrs. Nealey. Sixth graders will travel to the Georgia Aquarium on May 1, 2008.

Rebekah Mitchell named WCHS Teacher Of The Year

Rebekah Mitchell has been named the teacher of the year at Warren County High School for the '07-'08 school year. Mitchell is in her third year of teaching biology and physical science in Warren County.

Mrs. Mitchell's dedication to her students is unmatched. She goes the extra mile to insure that her students have every opportunity to succeed by making herself available before and after school to those who need extra help. Mitchell volunteers her time on Wednesday evening and Saturdays to help prepare students for the graduation test. She also holds her "Failure Is Not An Option" class in the afternoons. This class is a chance for students to make up work they are missing or for those who are struggling to get extra help. In addition, Mrs. Mitchell has taught in the afterschool Graduation Advantage Program (G.A.P.) to assist students in preparing for the science portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test. Her skills were also critical to the success of extending the G.A.P. through block-scheduled classes. Mrs. Mitchell also serves as the school's "Honors Day" program coordinator.

When asked how it felt to be named Teacher of the Year, Mitchell responded, "It came as a shock considering that this is only my third year as a teacher. I am very appreciative." Mrs. Mitchell credits much of her success to her aunt, Dr. Montgomery, whom she states keeps "pushing and pushing me to do more."

Mitchell also states that what she likes most about science is, "it's always changing. You constantly get to teach and learn something new. I also like the hands-on aspect of science."

Mrs. Mitchell's enthusiasm for her job is demonstrated by the rapport she has with her students. Jashana Graves, a 9th grade student at WCHS, says of Mitchell, "What makes her a great teacher is that she breaks science down in terms you can understand." Tyneisha Tolbert, 10th grader, adds "She makes learning fun with all the labs and hands-on activities."

Mrs. Mitchell resides in Augusta and is married to Jared Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is a medical student at MCG.

Hampton University Performs for Warren County

Hampton University's Concert Choir performed in the auditorium of Warren County's middle and high school Tuesday. Hampton University, a historically black college, is located in Hampton, VA and boasts Booker T. Washington among it's long line of distinguished graduates. Hampton University's enrollment of 5,700 draws students from almost every state in the union.

The concert choir conducted two performances at Warren County Middle & High School. The first performance was for the students and faculty of the middle and high school. The second concert was for the after school program and the entire community of Warren County. Each performance featured solo performances by several of the choir members.

Warren County senior, Jeremiah Banks, auditioned for the choir prior to the concert. Banks' audition consisted of a piano and voice audition. Dr. Dillard, choir director for Hampton, was impressed with Banks' musical talent and encouraged him to consider Hampton for his college career.

Williams Receives Time to Care Award

Mr. Andre Williams was honored Monday for his work in helping to maintain the the buildings and grounds of the Warren County school system. WRDW was on hand to present him with the Time to Care award for his efforts.

Superintendent Carey nominated Williams for the award in recognition for the effort and devotion that he puts forth in making the schools something that the students, faculty, and community can be proud of. According to Carey, "Our middle and high school building is now six years old. Visitors are amazed that the building looks as good today as it did when we opened it. The quality of all of our buildings is due in large part to the attention to detail that Mr. Andre puts into the daily care for our facilities."

Carey went on to state that Mr. Williams helps to instill pride in the students by insuring that they have a clean and attractive place to learn every day. All the students and faculty of Warren County Schools are very appreciative of the work that Mr. Williams and his staff does on a daily basis.

WCHS Celebrates Unity

The Warren County Professional Learning Center students recently held an assembly at WCHS in celebration of unity. The event also marked the beginning of black history month.

Coach Alvin Wright serves as the instructor for the P.L.C. program at Warren County High School. The program targets students that may have difficulties in the traditional classroom setting and for one reason or the other, have fallen behind their classmates. The P.L.C. program seeks to not only work with students who are struggling academically, but to guide all students in the lessons of life that sometimes go untaught. Coach Wright's ability to talk to and relate to young people on a level that they understand and identify with makes him the ideal teacher and role model for these students.

The program began with readings by Reginald Johnson, Travis Burley, and C.J. Williams. Several students then presented a short skit celebrating unity and kicking off black history month. Mr. Richardson's chorus class then entertained the audience with gospel music featuring Jerimiah Banks on keyboards and Shandria Walker on drums. Coach Hutto then honored several football players with their post-season awards by presenting them with their certificates.

The best was saved for last as former Thomson Bulldog and current University of South Carolina standout, Casper Brinkley delivered the keynote address to the students. Brinkley encouraged the students to never give up on their pursuit of their dreams. He also encouraged them to take their school work seriously stating that the effort in the classroom early on will open more doors for you later in life.

Band Students Sign Scholarships

Two Warren County High School band members accepted scholarship offers recently. James Wilburn and Shandria Walker are examples of just how far the Band program at WCHS has come under first year director Scott Richardson.

Both students had multiple offers and schools to choose from. Wilburn settled on Albany State after a visit to the school last week. Walker will begin her college career at Augusta State after accepting her music scholarship.

Wilburn plays trumpet in the Screaming Devil band and Walker plays the drums.

Vaughn is "Golden"

Warren County High School science teacher, Bill Vaughn, was surprised to open the door of his classroom to be greeted by his wife Angie, Superintendent Carey, and Brad Means from News Channel 6. Brad Means and representatives from CSRA Federal Credit Union were on hand to award Mr. Vaughn the Golden Apple Award for his work in the classroom.

The 2007-2008 school year represents Vaughn’s 40th year in the teaching profession. Most of those years were spent teaching at Thomson High School. While at Thomson, Mr. Vaughn taught science to several of the current Warren County High faculty members including, Mr. Swann, Mrs. Mitchell, Coach Hutto, and Coach Wright. He even taught Superintendent Carey when she was a student at Thomson. After 40 years of teaching, it is apparent that Mr. Vaughn loves his job.

Means' first question to Vaughn after presenting him with the award was, “Why do you like teaching?” Vaughn replied with, “I love the children, and I love to help them out.” Senior Sharane Johnson confirms Mr. Vaughn’s love of students. “He’s an intelligent, kind, and wise gentleman. Mr. Vaughan helps all his students understand not only biology, chemistry, and physical science, but life as well.”

Warren County honors students and teachers for 1st quarter

Warren County Middle and High School recognized several students and teachers for outstanding work during the first quarter of the school year in a program held this afternoon. Each person was honored for their contribution to the improvement of Warren County Schools.

WCMS principal, Truett Abbott began the program by introducing the middle school teacher of the quarter, Ms. Tan Burnett. Mrs. Burnett's students scored higher than any other WCMS class on their standardized tests. She also goes the extra mile by assisting with many activities outside the classroom. Ms. Brunett's contributions make her a valuable part of Warren County Schools, both in and out of the classroom.

Warren County High students, Curtis Williams and Shandria Walker took the stage next to introduce the WCHS teacher of the quarter. Mr. Watson, a first year math teacher was chosen for his dedication to his students. Mr. Watson makes himself available to tutor any student who needs extra help after school. Mr. Watson also can be seen volunteering at football games and other after school activities.

Sharane Johnson and Eugene Andrews stepped forward next to present Assisstant Principal Barnes an award for going "above and beyond" the call of duty at both Warren County High and Warren County Middle. Mrs. Barnes performed the job of two people much of last year while the high school was in search of a new principal. Mrs. Barnes also served as the cheerleading advisor until someone could be found to fill that role this year. As the principal in charge of curriculum for both schools, Mrs. Barnes works every day to improve the learning opportunities for Warren County students.

Athletic director, Richard Arrington came forward next with several honors to present to Warren County students. Arrington's first award went to a WCMS student who displayed honesty and character beyond his years. Quentavious Johnson discovered that someone had lost a wallet while cleaning up in the gym after a recent basketball game. Johnson discovered the wallet contained $500 in cash after opening it to find out who it belonged to and immediately turned the wallet and it's contents over to Coach Arrington so that it's owner could be found. The owner of the wallet rewarded Johnson for his honesty. We are proud of Quintavious for displaying the character that makes Warren County Schools the fine place that it is.

Coach Arrington then recognized two accomplishments of students on the athletic field. The boy's cross country team was recognized for competing in the state tournament. Those who made the trip to compete were: Jacquon Jackson, Daniel Crawford, Stanley Johnson, Ticaro Heath, and Jacquez Moss. The team was led by Coach Brian Wallace.

Coach Arrington then brought down the house when he called the football team and coaches to the stage to present them with the first region championship trophey for Warren County High School since 1981. Coach Hutto proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of the entire team and coaching staff. Hutto reminded the audience that the season is not over and challenged everyone, students and faculty alike, to come out and support the Screaming Devils in their game this week against the Bulldogs of E.C.I. as they continue to strive towards a state championship trophy

Warren County FBLA Cleans Up

The Warren County High School chapter of FBLA is lending a hand to help keep Warren County Middle and High School clean. FBLA has committed to clean the new stadium each week after a home football game.

Crystal Gillom, Tracey Harris, Amber Ivey, Jasmine Cowins and Jamal Dawson all met at 10:00 after a long night of playoff action to clean up from the previous night's exciting game. There was no evidence of Friday night's action about an hour and a half later. FBLA advisor Scott Swann stated, "They just worked hard and it simply shows how appreciative these students are to have a quality facility like the new football stadium. This is just another indication of the type of quality students we have here at Warren County."

Any student that is interested in helping to keep our stadium clean is welcome to join FBLA each Saturday after a home game at 10:00.

21st Century Provides Summer Opportunities

The Warren County 21st Century Program is proving that the summer can be educational as well as fun for Warren County students. Under the guidance of Mrs. Pretlow and Mr. Lee, the 21st Century Program has developed several "camps" for students to participate in this summer. Camps include sports, drama, art, writing, math, and spanish.

Mr. Lee states that attendance has been excellent for all camps. Participation has grown steadily since the camps began during the week of Memorial Day. Any young person who resides in Warren County is eligible to attend whether they are students of the Warren County School System or not.

The camp day is broken into two sessions. The morning camps begin at 9:00 and run until 12:00. The afternoon camps run from 1:00 until 4:00. Students who stay the entire day are offered lunch between sessions.

Record Attendance at WCMS Spring Ball

One hundred and ten Warren County Middle School students participated in the Spring Ball Walk and Dance on Saturday, May 12, 2007. Students were dressed in formal gowns and suits. Four hundred and forty five friends and family attended the Spring Ball Walk ceremony in the auditorium.

The event marked record family attendance and record student participation. The ball was sponsored by Ms. Raschondrius Burnett and Mrs. Cynthia Lewis assisted by Mr. Jesse Dawson, Mrs. Vonita Nealey, and Mrs. Vera Williams. Mr. Josef Stancer provided the music. Mr. Scott Swann, technology teacher, took pictures of the event for posting on the school website. Also, he took pictures of many students at their request and the photos will be returned to the students by Friday.

Seventh grade student, Corterrius Johnson, was named King of the Ball. Court members included, Tyesha Heath, Sharlesa Gordon, Chyna Lee, Jasmine Ruff, Dominique Heard, Edricus Williams, and Darius Williams.

Cameras flashed and people cheered as each student was introduced on stage. Students and parents took more pictures in the commons area while the families and friends were able to talk with the students. Afterwards, students proceeded to the decorated cafeteria and danced to music provided by Mr. Stancer. They also were able to enjoy a display of food and punch provided by the sponsors. Principal Abbott was heard to comment, “This is a terrific parent involvement event. We can all be very proud of our students and their very supportive parents.”

Valedictorian & Salutatorian Announced

Warren County High School is proud to announce the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the graduating class of 2007. Chosen as valedictorian is Sammantha Jemison. Sammantha plans to attend the University of Georgia upon graduation and major in veterinary science. Jemison is the daughter of Johnny and Sammie Jo Waters of Warrenton.

Representing Warren County High School as this year's Salutatorian is Mr. Quamaine Walker. Quamaine is the son of Mr. David Walker of Warrenton. Quamaine also plans to attend the University of Geogia following graduation.

Warren County Holds Jr./Sr. Prom

Warren County High School held their annual Jr./Sr. Prom Saturday night. The night had a tropical air to it as the theme for this year's prom was A Night in Tropical Paradise. Juniors and Seniors were dressed in their finest attire for the celebration that capped off a week of activities leading up to the prom.

Students participated in limbo contests and wore tropical attire including leis for much of the week. Students also participated in a mock automobile accident on Thursday. The event, organized by Ms. Strait, gave students a graphic demonstration of a wreck caused by alcohol. WCHS would like to thank the members of the Warren County EMS, MCG helicopter team, and the Georgia State Patrol who helped make the event such a success.

Prom night began with students arriving for the Grand March. Students marched into the auditorium and posed on the stage like celebrities for a quick photo opportunity. The students then headed for pictures and the actual prom itself. Tommy Seals was named prom king and Jaquita Lane was named prom queen.

Warren County Announces Georgia Young Author Winners

A total of twenty-one students from the sixth grade through the twelfth grade recently competed in the Warren County system level of the Young Georgia Authors' Writing competition.

The Young Georgia Authors' Writing Competition encourages and recognizes student achievement in writing throughout Georgia. The competition also encourages students to develop writing that represents their best efforts.

All students currently enrolled in Georgia public schools, kindergarten through twelfth grade, may submit writing entries for the system level competition; however, the maximum number of writing entries any local system may submit to the state competition is one per grade level. Any type of student writing is allowed. Entries could be short stories, poetry, essays, journals, personal narratives, reports or any other original student writing.

Bishop Chosen as WCHS Principal

The Warren County Board of Education approved Ja'net Bishop as the next principal of Warren County High School. Mrs. Bishop is currently serving as an assistant principal at Evans High School in Columbia County. She will be joining WCHS on March 26th.

Mrs. Bishop brings a long and distinguished record of service not only in the area of education, but to her community and country as well. In addition to serving as an assistant principal at Evans, Mrs. Bishop has served as the school counselor/assistant principal addressing discipline at Columbia County's alternative school. Bishop has also served as the school counselor for Harlem High School from 1996-1999. In 2000/2001, she was chosen as a member of the SACS Review Team for Calhoun County Middle & High School in Ediston, Ga. Mrs. Bishop played an integral part in the development and management of several school-wide programs including the Character Education/Advisement Program at Evans, the Peer Mediation and Very Involved Parent programs at Harlem Middle School, and the Vital Link program for at-risk students and their parents for all of Columbia County.

Mrs. Bishop has served as a valuable part of the community since being moved to Augusta while serving in the military. She comes to us highly recommended by the Columbia County Juvenile Court for her work as a consultant regarding at-risk youth. Mrs. Bishop has been involved with both the Richmond and Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, Warren County's Youth Leadership Program, and the Augusta Child Advocacy Center. Mrs. Bishop has also developed and presented many workshops relative to family and children's issues and effective parenting to civic groups and other community organizations.

Mrs. Bishop gained valuable leadership skills while serving her country in the United States Army. While in the military, Bishop received her commission and served in Operation Desert Storm.

Mrs. Bishop is married to William Bishop, a teacher and coach at Morgan Road Middle School in Hephzibah, Georgia. They have two sons, William and Matthew. William is in the 12th grade at Evans High School and Matthew is also at Evans in the 11th grade.

Bubble-ology

Visitors to Mrs. Darden’s middle school class are likely to encounter a very different style of learning than they may be used to. Mrs. Darden is the Excel Program teacher for grades six through eight. Excel students enjoy participating in problem solving activities and are constantly chasing perfection.

The Excel class recently completed a unit in “Bubble-ology”. During the unit, the students compared and contrasted different solutions to determine which solution produced the best bubbles. They also added different amounts of glycerin to solutions to observe its effect upon bubble production and longevity. Mrs. Darden seeks to constantly extend and enrich the learning experience of her students by challenging the Excel students to always strive for a higher level of excellence. Projects like “Bubble-ology” make learning fun while and challenging at the same time.

Warren County Celebrates Black History Month

Warren County Middle & High School held their annual Black History Program Friday, February 23. The program featured students, faculty, staff, and members of the community as they celebrated the contributions of African Americans to the history of the United States.

The day's festivities began with a faculty lunch that included many traditional "soul" food items on the menu. The program began shortly after lunch. Anquaneshia Johnson and Tynesha Tolbert led off the program with a presentation entitled "The Meaning of Black History." Mr. James Isom then gave the history of and performed several negro spirituals for those in attendance. Mrs. Barnes, assistant principal of Warren County High School, gave an inspiring dramatization of Sojouner Truth's speech, "Ain't I's a Woman?" The program also included a performance by the middle school step team as well as a short play about the importance of black history in America by several middle school students.

The keynote speaker for the day's activities was Sheryl Williams, news anchor for WJBF Channel 6 news in Augusta. Mrs. Williams spoke of how she grew up in a small town in Florida, much like Warrenton. She spoke of the obstacles that she faced as a black woman on the road to success. She encouraged the student body to work hard in school, pursue your dreams, and to always leave a positive first impression.

Vocational teacher Jesse Dawson added a greenhouse to his Agriculture Class twelve years ago. Since then, the greenhouse has grown into one of the most successful projects at Warren County High. Students work throughout the year to insure a productive spring and summer selling season.

Mr. Dawson and his students expanded the greenhouse program last year by erecting a second greenhouse at WCHS. The added greenhouse was needed due to the demand for plants that the program has created from the school and community. Plants are grown in the original greenhouse and then moved to the new building to be sold when they reach maturity. The new greenhouse includes concrete walkways to make it easier for customers to navigate the large assortment of plants available for purchase.

Mr. Dawson and his students are always working to improve the greenhouses. This winter saw students installing a new irrigation system in the growing greenhouse. No longer will students have to do the watering by hand. The watering will now be done by a drip and mist irrigation system. This system will also include a timer that will be set to turn on twice a day. Mr. Dawson says that this will also improve the growth and quality of the plants by allowing for fertilizer to be added to the water.

Mr. Dawson uses the greenhouse program to expose his students to plants that are not native to our area. Students have successfully grown Bougainvillea, Bromelaid, and Banana Plants. All of these plants thrive in a tropical environment and demand much care and attention to survive in a cold climate and require constant care to grow in our part of the world.

The Warren County greenhouse holds more than one hundred species of plants. Many of the surrounding citizens look forward to the annual plant sale that begins in the spring. It is an opportunity for the students to showcase their years work. The plant sale also helps to introduce many students to the world of business for the first time. Students are in charge of pricing, inventory control, and money management. Many customers return year after year to support Warren County High School and to take advantage of the large selection of plants that are often priced well below retail.

Warren county holds First Annual Scripps Spelling Bee

The Warren County Schools held the first county wide spelling bee at Warren County High School Thursday, January 25. The competition included contestants from the fourth grade through the eighth grade. Contestants took turns spelling words and were eliminated for spelling any word incorrectly.

The two finalists were eighth graders Aliyah Brooks and Chynna Lee. Miss Brooks misspelled quarrelsome. Miss Lee then spelled the word correctly and then immediately spelled lubricant to capture the title. Miss Lee will now advance to the regional competition as the local representative from Warren County.

The judges for the event were Bunny Hunter, Emily Massey, and Emma Sinkfield. Pronouncing the words for the competition were Desherica Partlow and Freeman Elementary Assistant Principal Katherine Hinesley. Record Keeper for the event was Warren County High Secretary Belinda Kitchens.
